Following the Joy
How I chose a professional coach training program
Six months ago, coaching quietly became my obsession—not as a sudden career change, but as a skill to cultivate now while building toward a more meaningful, flexible future. Maybe for my later career. Maybe for retirement. To get started, I needed the right training program.

My Research Process: No Stone Unturned
I started by talking to people who knew the landscape—a friend currently in the Co-Active Coaching Institute’s (CTI) program and another who'd built a successful coaching practice after certification. I had an honest discussion with a CTI program representative who was also a working coach.
I also read books, watched YouTube videos, listened to podcasts hosted by and for coaches, and joined a Facebook group for coaches to read unfiltered experiences with different training programs. In addition, I tried a budget Udemy course—solid content, but the instructor’s grating voice and choppy five-minute modules killed my learning flow. (I never finished it.)
All along, I was crunching practical details: comparing programs and costs, having thoughtful discussions with my husband about the commitment, and identifying how I could use these skills now in my current role.
Then, I tested the waters. CTI’s free introductory workshop gave me real training with zero pressure.
Why CTI Stood Out
After exploring top programs like iPEC, CoachU, and Erickson, CTI won me over. Their Co-Active model—where coach and client collaborate as equals to unlock potential—aligned perfectly with how I naturally connect with others. It’s not about advice; it’s about empowering self-discovery. That resonated with my core belief: Real growth comes from within.
The free workshop proved CTI’s quality immediately. No fluff—just practical, hands-on learning. Their flexibility (starting with a standalone Fundamentals workshop) let me try before committing to a full training package (they even back the first workshop with a money-back guarantee, which gave me extra confidence in taking that first step).
Even after signing up for the Fundamentals class, I had concerns about sitting through three days of Zoom learning. Their in-person class wasn't being offered in my city and traveling wasn't feasible. I had struggled to keep my focus during Zoom sessions from a Business School Leadership program I'd done a few years back.
But CTI blew my expectations away. The sessions were interactive, immersive, and alive. Breakout rooms, real-time coaching practices, even facilitators using movement to keep energy high—by the end, my doubts were gone. This wasn’t a webinar; it was a living workshop. And it left me excited for more.
For Anyone Considering Signing Up for Training to Become a Professional Coach
My hard-won advice:
Talk to recent grads or those currently in the program—get their unfiltered take.
Experience the training (most quality programs offer samples).
Audit the real time commitment (it’s often more than advertised).
Notice your strengths—where do people already seek your guidance?
I’d love to hear:
What’s something you explored carefully before committing to?
For coaches: What helped you take the leap?
